“...occupying a space where traditional Tejano,  Cumbia, and Son Jarocho music meet face to face with synth-heavy new wave inspiration. It’s not a dense space with many inhabitants…in fact they may be there by themselves.”    - José Galvan KCRW

“...expressly cinematic, but thrives on spacey Latin pop tunes...”    -Kevin Curtin, The Austin Chronicle

“...a band for the world we grew up in: where The Cure could coexist with Soda Estereo, where cumbia was just as common as Depeche Mode.”      -Latino Rebels

“Don’t be surprised if you hear them in the near future on the big screen...”   -Joel Moya, Remezcla

Como Las Movies is an indie cumbia pop quartet from Austin led by chief songwriter Nelson Valente Aguilar. An Austinite by way of border town McAllen, Texas, Aguilar combines his pan-Latin and pop musical influences into an unmissable duality that has been endearingly referred to as the Nuevo Wave sound. Since its inception, the band has been received with wide recognition playing SXSW festival and the much coveted Blues On The Green summer festival.

Como Las Movies has just been nominated in “Best Latin Band” category for the 2020 the Austin Music Awards.

Alongside musical partners, Rene Chavez (vocals), Jaguar (Bass), and Alfredo Rios (percussion), the ensemble has showcased for SXSW, NPR Tiny Desk Tour, and Austin’s Blues on the Green summer series. In 2016, Como Las Movies collaborated with hip-hop artist Niña Dioz (MX) for a remix of her single “Mierda”. In 2018, Fania Records (NYC) filmed the band paying tribute to Latin soul artist, Ralfi Pagan for the East Austin Fania Sessions.

Nuevo Wave, the band’s latest EP, explores cinematic textures and lush rhythms that nod to British New Wave and Son Jarocho love songs on a spine of fundamental cumbia. It was co-produced at Lechehouse Music by Beto Martinez (Brownout, Money Chicha, Grupo Fantasma).
